Obesity Mother, Child Asthma Risk

Be careful to keep your weight gain during pregnancy. Because pregnant womenwho are obese are more at risk of childbearing potential asthma, compared withpregnant women with normal weight, a study in Sweden states.

The study surveyed more than 129 000 189 000 mothers in Stockholm and their children, find a mother who is very overweight, or with a body mass index 35 and above, with 61 percent chance of improving their child's risk of suffering fromasthma at the time of their ages ranged between 8 up to 10 years.

The study, which was held jointly by several institutions in Australia and the University of Umea in Sweden, published in the Journal of Allergy and ClinicalImmunology.

Adrian Lowe of Mudoch Children Research Institute and University of Melbournealso explained that if mothers were obese, then it also increases the risk of childhood obesity, which in turn will affect the baby's immune system and its response to various allergies.

"These results suggest that the campaign to reduce obesity before conception willprovide a beneficial effect because it can reduce asthma in children," Lowe said inthe media.
